Etchell’s Trophy

What makes a photograph really work in monochrome?

That was the challenge for members in this season’s Etchells Vase competition, where judge Jim Pascoe BA ABIPP ARPS reviewed 43 entries exploring the power of tone, contrast and simplicity.

Jim was looking for more than just photographs with the colour removed — instead seeking pictures where monochrome was key to the success of the image, helping to simplify the scene or strengthen its impact.

Jim called the overall standard "exceptional", and as ever we had a wide range of creative interpretations of monochrome photography on display.
